SEKILAS MENGENAI BANTING SELANGOR...

BANTING, a town in the district of Kuala Langat, Selangor, has a laid-back lifestyle and offers good food, reasonably-priced shopping and has a rich history. Situated on the banks of Sungai Langat, the town, with a population of about 50,000, has many attractions and one of them is a good place to shop for textiles. The Indah Pesona Textile godown at Wisma MDKL is popular for its low-priced baju kurung and curtains. If you love saris and Punjabi suits, go to Jalan Pekan Banting. There you will find many items from India and the biggest of the shops is called Harekrishna. After watching the beautiful sunset at Morib beach, treat your family to a hearty meal as a whole stretch of stalls selling everything from satay to sotong and ikan bakar comes alive at night. On Sundays, there is a karaoke session with a small price of RM2 per song. Historically, the beach was a landing point for the British and Indian liberation forces during World War II. Nature lovers can go jungle-trekking in the forest reserve at Bukit Jugra. Before reaching the peak, a lighthouse stands guard to guide vessels plying the Straits of Malacca. The view from the peak is breathtaking, so don’t forget to bring along a camera. Bukit Jugrah used to be called Parcelar Hill — derived from the Arabic word balasar, which means “above the head”. Visitors should not miss the prominent Kanchong Darat landmark which is the Sidek residence belonging to Datuk Sidek Abdullah Kamar, the father of the Sidek badminton brothers. The brothers’ eldest sister stays there now, but visitors who wish to see the house are always welcome. Before reaching Bukit Jugra, visitors will come across Makam Sultan Abdul Samad, the resting place of Sultan Abdul Samad Almarhum Raja Abdullah. He reigned as the Sultan of Selangor from 1857 to 1898. During his reign, Selangor saw its only civil war, which came to be known as the Klang War. Banting town is also famous for its rojak mee and cendol. According to locals, the best rojak mee, which is pasembur and yellow noodles with five different curries, can be found at Restoran Tawaqal. The restaurant, run by a family of Indian Muslims from India, has been at Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad since 1941. Only two cendol stalls are worth mentioning here. Both can be found along Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad — one in front of the old Lido cinema, which uses the traditional method to shave the ice, and the other in front of the KFC restaurant. Istana Bandar is historical as the fifth Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, built the royal palace in 1905. It was the birth place of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who died in office. The palace is open daily to the public. Admission is free. Visiting hours are from 8am to 6pm. For those who want fresh fish, Kampung Endah fishing village is the spot to visit. Fishermen can be seen unloading their catch or mending broken nets here. There is a Chinese restaurant in the area and patrons can ask the restaurant to cook the fish for you. Another popular tourist spot is Fazz Enterprise Kerepek House located at Kanchong Darat which offers 75 different traditional crackers and kuih. It is owned by the Mahmuddin Abas family which grows its own tapioca, banana and oil palm to make the snacks. The family also owns a small shop selling furniture made from Indonesian Jati wood. Pantai Kelanang is a new tourist spot in Banting. Unlike Morib beach, which is a hive of activity, it is quite serene here. With a white sandy beach nestled behind mangrove trees, it is a place to relax and enjoy the peace and calm. To get to this beach, take the same road to Morib beach. After Tongkah, signboards have been placed to guide visitors. Banting town has suddenly captured the attention of all Malaysians and for the first time people all over the country are talking about it. It did not even get so much of attention even when the Sidek brothers, who come from Kampung Olak Lempit not far from Banting town, were winning honours on the national and international front during their heyday. The town is located 32km from Klang and 20km from the KL International Airport (KLIA). The townspeople are as stunned as the rest of the nation over the brutal killing of millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya along with three others. The mood is sombre in Banting and the people were devastated, finding it difficult to believe such a ruthless crime took place in their area. Inevitably, the news of the murder and arrests had been the talking point in coffee shops, offices and schools especially over the past two days. StarMetro made a check around Banting town and found life continues to go on at a slow pace. It resembles the usual set up of a small town which is mostly filled with double-storey shophouses. The visit also found that there were not many people out and about in the town which appeared rather quiet compared with normal days. The shops including restaurants and retail outlets were rather empty. The people seemed to have come to terms with the frequent appearance of police vehicles, journalists and photographers in town. Anthony Paul, 47, said Banting attracted a lot of attention from people all over the country. He said the news reports had also placed the town in a bad light.

What is Paragliding
Paragliding is a sport of assisted human flight. A paraglider is a motorless, inflatable wing, made of rip-stop nylon and fixed with Kevlar® lines that secure a pilot's harness. The pilot sits in the harness and launches the vehicle by foot, running off inclines, hills or mountains. He or she steers the wing by weight shift and application of brakes that changes the shape of the rear edge of the wing. The function of a paraglide is to soar on wind currents. The record for staying aloft is over 11 hours, and the distance record, 186 miles (300km). The average flight for the every day enthusiast is about 3 hours, with heights reaching 15,000 feet (4,500 meters).
One of the advantages of paragliding is that the entire wing and harness fold up into a 30 lb (13.6 kg) backpack. This makes it easy for a paraglider to hitch-hike back from a flight, or to transport his wing by checking it in as baggage on a bus or even an airline.
If purchasing a paraglider, make sure it bears certifications of quality, which the dealer should explain. Recommended additional equipment consists of a variometer or altimeter, which tells you how fast you are rising or falling, and a 2-way radio. For those who love the quiet peace of soaring bird-like through the inviting sky, the investment is worth every penny.
Courses in paragliding are essential for anyone taking up the sport. Basic techniques and a solo flight are achieved in a 2-day introductory course. Afterwards, if you want to continue with the sport, it's recommended you get certified through more advanced training.
When selecting a school for paragliding instruction in the US, look for instructors who are certified by the United States Hang Gliding Association (USHGA). You can contact the United State Hang Gliding Association for more information about reputable schools.
Paragliding and hang gliding are similar, but they do have a few key differences. A hang glider is heavier and must be transported on a roof rack. A hang glider also suspends the pilot in a prone position, rather than sitting, and hang gliders fly slightly faster and can fly higher than paragliders, up to 17,500 feet (5,334m). Parasailing and parachuting are very different from paragliding or hang gliding. A parasail does not soar freely on the wind, but is pulled behind a motorized boat, while a parachutist jumps from a plane to free-fall to the ground, as do parajumpers who jump from fixed objects like bridges, mountains or buildings.
History of Paragliding There is no evidence to tell who was the first man to paraglide. Some suggest that it was David Barish in 1963. But, of course, that is not sure. Photos and videos show a group of skydivers in eastern Montana in the late 70's. They were flying their parachutes off from the small hills. In the French Alps, some climbers used small ram-air canopies in order to make their descents from the peaks safer and more efficient. These parachutes weighed only eight pounds, flew at 20 m/h., and lost 3 feet height per every one foot. Soon (by the mid-eighties), a new challenge was found. Man had just found a way to prolong the distance and duration of such flights. The secret was in the areas of rising air. Many attempts were made in order to improve parachute glide performance, for example, increasing the wingspan, using non-porous fabric, and modifying the shape and trim of the airfoil. A new design meant changes in the flight characteristics and new pilot skills and techniques were needed. Designs that appeared to be successful were produced in large numbers to meet the demands of the paraglider pilots, whose number grew drastically. And so, by 1986 the sport was well established in Europe. Europe, Asia, and the US have developed a wide range of equipment in the last several years. Manufacturers put their products thorough number of tests to insure the pilots' safety. In the US, in the developing and marketing paragliders were involved at least three manufacturers of skydiving equipment. Their products were extremely safe and stable. But, as a disadvantage, they lacked the performance of the European designs. Fewer radical new designs emerged by the early nineties. Production was concentrated on paragliders that had very stable handling characteristics, and were suitable for the general flying population. Step by step the wings were classified in different groups, according to their usage. There were different canopies designed for student pilots, intermediate (recreational) pilots, and competition pilots. In France and Germany were established standardized procedures for testing and certifying paragliders. Now this standard represents the benchmark for all manufacturers around the world. The development of the wings from a ram-air skydiving parachute technology, the two sports led to the developing of to kinds of sports - skydiving (parachuting) and paragliding. In fact, they become full-circle in some regards. Presently, there are several sport-jumping-canopy designs. Their wings are non-porous, elliptical shaped and with thin-profile airfoils, which allow higher speeds, better glide performance, and greater aerodynamic efficiency. These features, which were especially developed for paragliders, are now being incorporated back into skydiving parachutes. Of course, though some paragliding wings look at first sight similar to some skydiving canopies, they have very different flight characteristics that require completely different pilot technique.

Preparing for a take-off
The pilot stands straight in a starting position in the middle of the trailing edge, puts the harnesses on his elbow, the brake lines are separated from the risers and checked. The pilot takes the front risers and stretches his hands upwards positioning the stretched risers behind him. The back risers are above his shoulders. Right before the start the pilot checks all elements of the apparatus and the pack. If the flight is delayed all the check is made again. The next step is levelling the glider - the pilot runs the first steps with his body moderately stooped. The cupola fills with air and lifts above the pilot raising his hands. He is upright again. Now he has to view the whole cupola in order to check the flying conditions. If there is something wrong, he makes the corrections with the help of the brake lines. In case the corrections appear unsuccessful, the take-off has to be stopped and the pilot directs the wing across the slope pulling the brake lines.
If the flying conditions are suitable,
the pilot accelerates the cupola to the
point of elevating with the help of his
stooped body. He begins with even steps
and constantly increases their length.
The brake lines are pulled so that the
cupola does get ahead of the pilot and
the takeoff does not change its
direction. The elevation speed is
reached when the canopy lifts the pilot
from the ground. Its value must be
between the minimum collapse and the
speed of best flying. If there is a strong wind, the reverse launch is the better choice. The difference is in the start position. The pilot faces the paraglider holding the brakes. After he fixes the cupola above his head, he follows the steps of a normal take-off. There are two types of a reverse launch: with parallel and with crossed hands. Stall If the slow pulling of the brakes proceeds, the stream departs from the upper part of the wing, the glider stops, the cupola is unstable and collapses with great speed. This state is called a stall. Flying in virage The basic technique of flying in virage is very simple. In order to go in, the pilot has to pull the brake line on the corresponding side and to go out - he follows the opposite procedure. There are many other ways of performing a virage: faster or slower, with a longer or shorter radius, evenly or precipitously. There are three kinds of virage: a virage at full speed, a slightly disturbed virage and a considerably disturbed virage.
Landing Risks at flight First of all it must be mentioned that the paraglider does not have a solid structure so it has some peculiarities that make it different from other flying apparatuses. Secondly, as many years' experience shows, dangerous situations rarely occur during a flight, but if they do, they may confuse the pilot and may require unusual corrections. Most often the major danger is caused not by the flying situation itself but by the panic-stricken pilot, who feels helpless left to those unknown forces.
Stall
There are many possible causes. Besides the pilot's mistakes, they can be changes in the weather conditions and disadvantages of the place (a too short track, many hindrances, etc.). In order to make corrections, the pilot must accelerate the wing. Parachute effect When the stream has departed, the apparatus gets first in a parachuting condition - the cupola is filled with air but it is too soft. It is streamed only from the inside, sometimes the wing even glides backwards. The speed of collapse is from 3 to 6 m/sec.
Spin All maneuvers in stall are unpredictable and extremely dangerous.
Closure Extreme elevation In some meteorological situations the regions of rising currents can be of such a size that the pilot is not able to get out horizontally without going into the clouds. By using the maneuvers for emergency lowering, he can decrease the height even in a strong current. There is one more way of solving the problem that is called stall in the B-lines. With the brakes in his hands, the pilot catches the B-risers at the height of the locks and pulls them. The first 10-15 centimeters are against the strong action. Then the stream departs and the cupola bends slightly backwards. With the next10-15 centimeters the speed of collapse increases and the canopy moves in the direction of the pelengacy. The pilot must leave the current at about 250m above the land by releasing the B-lines. Using the life system
