PEKAN KAPAR.

Who would believe that a power station that generates 2420 MW of electricity could also host thousands of waterbirds? Well, this amazing phenomenon happens all year round at the Kapar Energy Ventures, popularly known also as Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Power Station or Kapar Power Station, a top producer of electricity in Malaysia.

Located 56km west of Kuala Lumpur, off the coastal road between Port Klang and Kuala Selangor facing the Straits of Malacca SJSSAA is the largest power plant in Malaysia with a generating capacity of 2420 MW. The only power station in Malaysia with triple fuel firing capability (gas, oil, and coal).

Waders Photography.

A group of us went to Kapar power station to do waders photography. The trip was organized by Rahmah of KBD (thanks for the arrangements Rahmah) and the group consisted of myself, Sugawara, Miss Lim, Sam, Nosrat, Suzi, Shidah, Mariani, Dr. Abraham and Lilia, and of course Rahmah. We left KL in the afternoon around 2 pm and would assemble outside the Kapar power station around 4:00 pm. After getting our visitor pass from the security, we were met by Mr. Nagaraju(if I am not mistaken) from the PR section who later took us to the briefing room where the temporary pass valid for a year were prepared and given to us. With the pass, we should be able to visit the ash pond in the power station without much hassle in the future. The sight of waders taking off was too awsome for me to describe. I could hear the wings flapping as the flocks flew above me.  Read more...

Fishing at Kapar Hiydro Power Plant.

After spending some time at the first location, we then proceed to move closer to the Power Plant structure. At this new spot, the bites were more frequent. I managed to land some more small bronze croakers (gelama) and a small sting ray (ikan tuka), Navin managed to land some gelama pisang and George managed to land an ikan duri and a small tuka.

Waders (Wikipedia)

Waders, called shorebirds in North America (where "wader" is used to refer to long-legged wading birds such as storks and herons), are members of the order Charadriiformes, excluding the more marine web-footed seabird groups. The latter are the skuas (Stercorariidae), gulls (Laridae), terns (Sternidae), skimmers (Rynchopidae), and auks (Alcidae). Also, the pratincoles (Glareolidae) and the Crab Plover (Dromadidae), which bear greater resemblance to waders, are closely related to the seabirds.

This leaves about 210 species, most of which are associated with wetland or coastal environments. Many species of Arctic and temperate regions are strongly migratory, but tropical birds are often resident, or move only in response to rainfall patterns. Some of the Arctic species, such Little Stint are amongst the longest distance migrants, spending the non-breeding season in the southern hemisphere.

The majority of species eat small invertebrates picked out of mud or exposed soil. Different lengths of bills enable different species to feed in the same habitat, particularly on the coast, without direct competition for food. Many waders have sensitive nerve endings at the end of their bills which enable them to detect prey items hidden in mud or soft soil. Some larger species, particularly those adapted to drier habitats will take larger prey including insects and small reptiles.
